Wisconsin Cheese a Hit in Private Label

Wisconsin cheese is benefiting from the steady growth in private label products, according to the Madison, Wis.-based Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB).

“Private label has always been important to Wisconsin cheese,” said Stan Woodworth, senior vice president of channel management for WMMB. “What’s changing is the amount of innovation and sophistication in private label cheeses. As consumers become more savvy about cheese and marketing, retailers have increased their efforts to make private label products more attractive. And they’re succeeding.”

For its part, WMMB promotes a cheese program to private label marketers that features a packaging logo depicting a family farm setting with a red barn and grassy pasturelands as a background to the words “Wisconsin Cheese. A number of retailers - including Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Lowes Foods, Piggly Wiggly Alabama, Food City, Kroger and Supervalu’s Foodland and Shop ‘n Save stores - feature this Wisconsin logo on selected private label cheese, WMMB noted.
