Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., is looking to buy up several smaller-store sites around Sacramento, Calif., for a new neighborhood-oriented concept exclusively selling supermarket fare, The Sacramento Bee reported on June 26. According to the paper, the new stores would be roughly 40,000 square feet and “go head-to-head with low-priced, no-frills markets such as WinCo Foods.”

In other Walmart news, on June 24, a Chicago city council committee gave its approval for the retailer to build a second store in Chicago after a key union group said it reached a deal on wages with Walmart, Reuters reported. The agreement with the union group cleared the way for the city council’s zoning committee to approve plans for the Walmart location to be built in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side, and several aldermen said they expect more stores to be built soon.

Reuters added that Walmart said its goal is to build several dozen stores in Chicago.
