Walmart consistently beats Target on price when it comes to private label offerings but Target comes out cheaper on name brand offerings because of frequent sales and specials, according to recent research by Kantar Retail IQ.

Looking at a 14-item basket including edible and non-edible grocery items and health and beauty aids, Walmart is 3.6 percent less expensive for private label offerings. Among the items compared were ketchup, aluminum foil and baby powder.

This finding -- that for private label Walmart is less expensive than Target -- is consistent with previous versions of the study.

However, for national branded products, the findings were more favorable to Target, assuming consumers keep any eye out for temporary price cuts or limited-time-only sales.

Kantar began this semi-annual price comparison in 2009; this is the fifth iteration.
