Walgreens Committed to Growing Private Brands, Exec Says

Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens has several plans in the works moving forward including a commitment to growing private brands, said Joseph Magnacca, president of daily living products and solutions at the NACDS annual meeting in Scottsdale Saturday morning.

Magnacca shared that its plans include leveraging CCR (Customer Centric Retailing) and Duane Reade learnings into format development; moving from a buying organization to a selling organization; building private brand equity and support and challenging suppliers to offset cost changes through continuous process improvement.

Moe Alkamede, divisional vice president and general merchandise manager, private brands told attendees that between now and fall, Walgreens may be doing some SKU-rationalization.

“We’re going to continue with the Walgreens brand, but we’re going to limit it to categories that make sense,” he said.

Alkamede also said to keep an eye out for some private label packaging redesign rollouts.

The panel showed the audience a slide of the redesigned packaging for a product in the Walgreens Pet Shoppe private label pet line.
