Value to Be a Key Watch-Word for 2012, PLMA Panel Agrees

New forms of value, such as smaller grocery stores, home delivery services and smaller package sizes, will be key food retailing trends in 2012, agreed a group of industry commentators brought together in December by the Private Label Manufacturing Association to discuss how the industry changed over the course of 2011. The group also made predictions about private label trends for the coming year.

The panel expects these new approaches to be helpful for Baby Boomer and Millenial households, who currently struggle with balancing food costs with retirement savings and other life expenses.

Rising commodity prices and consumer opposition to price increases had a strong influence over the way retailers priced their merchandise in 2011, according to Michael Sansolo, a former senior executive at the Food Marketing Institute. The struggle between these two factors has caused retailers and manufacturers to decrease package size and consider “new forms of value,” Sansolo says.
