The Ticker

The idea of Target Corp., Minneapolis, and U.K.’s based Tesco entering the U.S. grocery arena simultaneously has caused some stir in the industry. Recently, Target has been spotted increasing its emphasis on food, including expansion of grocery space in its discount stores, as well as differentiating with its store brands — launching Archer Farms USDA-certified organic products and a line of super-premium pet foods under the LIFElong brand. Many worry that the two retailers will eat into the market share of supermarket chains, possibly leading to further consolidation within the grocery channel.
On the supplier side:
Wixon Inc., a supplier of food ingredients and other finished products, is celebrating its 100th year in business. As testimony to its “seasoned” past, the St. Francis, Wis.-based company was one of the first major food companies in the nation to become certified under the ISO9001:2000 standard.
Minneapolis-based Smyth Companies Inc. recently received Hormel Foods’ 2006 “Spirit of Excellence” Award. The Austin, Minn.-based company awards suppliers who attain superior rankings in product and service categories such as delivery performance, product quality, customer service, administration and plant quality audits. This is the fifth-consecutive year Smyth has received the award.
