Taking a more tech-savvy approach in the constant battle against obesity, Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., said it established a Web site for its Eating Right brand. The site, , offers product information and a coupon for $1 off any Eating Right product.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., opened its second generation of high-efficiency (HE.2) stores, which use 25 percent less energy than the baseline Wal-Mart Supercenter, the company said. The HE.2 stores incorporate new technological advances, including white roofs, low-flow bathroom faucets, LED lights and an advanced daylight harvesting system.
O’Naturals, Portsmouth, N.H., a natural and organic quick-service restaurant chain, said it would open a kiosk at the corporate offices of Hannaford Supermarkets, Portland, Maine, serving the headquarters’ more than 1,000 employees. The O’Naturals menu at Hannaford will offer a variety of the chains popular flatbread sandwiches, O’Naturals said.
Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market will stop offering disposable plastic grocery bags in all 270 of its stores throughout the United States, Canada and United Kingdom by Earth Day — April 22. The retailer said it estimates that 100 million plastic bags will be kept out of the environment between April 22 and the end of 2008.
