Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spartan Stores announced this past Tuesday that its private label packaging will now include front of package nutrition icons. The new labels support the voluntary Facts Up Front nutrition labeling system designed by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturing Association.
“As more stores begin implementing nutritional shelf-labeling programs such as NuVal, I think we will see a rise in other transparency methods including package labeling,” explains retail analyst Katie Mathis for the London-based retail consulting firm Planet Retail. “Shoppers looking to make healthy choices, but who feel they don’t have the time to comb through fine print nutrition labels, will be drawn to items that display nutritional information that’s easy to find and understand. Other retailers are likely to follow suit knowing that the average shopper goes for what’s easiest, and I think package labeling fills that role.”
“Nutritional labeling on packaging is clearly taking hold, customers respond favorably to it both in-store and on-package,” explains Jim Wisner, president of Libertyville, Ill.-based Wisner Marketing Group, Inc. “The difficulty is when you get very precise, like with programs such as NuVal, maintaining current information on the packaging could be difficult and might hurt the company if it is not accurate.”
