Shoppers Can Save 33 Percent Buying PL, PLMA Says

Shoppers can save an average 33.3 percent off their grocery bill by filling their market baskets with private label versions of 40 essential household items and pantry staples, according to a new study from the Private Label Manufacturer’s Association (PLMA).

“It’s a pretty good market basket that represents a good cross-section of the store,” Jim Hertel, managing partner with Barrington, Ill.-based retail consulting firm Willard Bishop, tells PLBuyer’s eReport. “It’s also interesting to see the disparity across categories.”

Included were spring cleaning items such as glass cleaner, paper towels and pine oil disinfectant, as well as two dozen pantry staples such as corn flakes, pasta sauce, carbonated beverages and personal necessities such as mouthwash and facial tissue.

Buying private label versions of the products saves nearly $42.30 (or nearly 33.3 percent), on average, for the total market basket.

For every category in the study, a leading national brand product was compared to a similar private label product and prices were adjusted to account for all known discounts, coupons and promotions available for each of the six shopping visits in the study, PLMA says.
