Trader Joe's and Walgreen's private label beers have bested two top-selling national brands in a blind taste test conducted by Consumer Reports magazine.
The results didn’t surprise analysts who say private label taste has been improving. “In a lot of different categories, we're hearing that private labels are scoring better than national labels,” says Jim Hertel, managing partner for Willard Bishop. These high marks are a result of retailers investing more time into the quality and packaging of their private labels, he adds.
Neil Stern, senior partner at McMillan Doolittle, agrees. “People are not making purchases simply based on price anymore,” he states. “They're also making purchases based on reputation and taste.”
In the case of this recent Consumer Reports study, taste is what helped Trader Joe's Name Tag and Walgreen's 1901 Big Flats beat out Corona Extra and Budweiser. The private label beers tied with Miller High Life.
Both Trader Joe's and Walgreen's beers won the title of “CR Best Buy” for being affordable while still holding a quality that was equal to or better than national beers.
The results are slated to appear in the February 2011 Consumer Reports. The results can also be found at www.consumerreports.org.
