Through a collaboration with North American Properties, Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix announced its first Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified store (certified through the U.S. Green Building Council).

The 28,000-square-foot store, located in Sarasota, Fla., opened in 2009, Publix said. North American Properties developed it as part of its green initiatives and in support of Publix’s environmental commitment. The store features construction waste recycling; LED light fixtures and skylights; low-emitting-vehicle parking; low-flow plumbing fixtures; paint, adhesives and other building products with low levels of volatile organic compounds; a reclaimed water system; and reflective roof systems.

“We learned a lot about sustainable building through this store,” said Maria Brous, Publix’s director of media relations. “We continue to look for ways to conserve resources and be responsible citizens in our communities while finding the best value for ourselves and our customers.”
