United Supermarkets to be Acquired by Albertson’s

United Supermarkets, LLC, announced today that it will be acquired by Albertson’s LLC, which currently operates more than 600 locations in 16 states. The acquisition includes The United Family’s 50 supermarket locations, 26 fuel sites, three distribution centers and one manufacturing facility throughout North and West Texas.

Upon completion of the transaction in October (subject to customary government approvals), United will operate as a separate business unit under Albertson’s LLC’s corporate structure. Robert Taylor, United’s CEO, will continue to lead the company as president of the United subsidiary, reporting directly to Bob Miller, CEO of Albertson’s LLC. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

When asked if United Supermarkets will retain its private label structure, Eddie Owens, director, Communications & Public Relations, The United Family, told PLBuyer, “It will be business-as-usual for the near term, and we will evaluate everything so that we can ensure we're providing the very best products we can to our guests.”

Albertson’s store brands include Essential Everyday, a value brand, Wild Harvest, an organic and natural brand, Culinary Circle, a premium line of food products,Stockman & Dakota, a line of hand-trimmed Premium Angus Beef, and Baby Basics, its baby products brand.

United Supermarkets currently use the Topco line of store brands, including the Food Club, Top Care, Full Circle, and Paws brands. It also carries Heath of Texas Bread Company bread products and Red River Farms Dairy Products.

Albertsons, an Idaho-based company with a history extending back to 1939, now operates in 16 states at over 600 locations. 

United has been family-owned since its founding in 1916 and retains deep community roots in Lubbock, Texas, where it is based. United currently operates 50 traditional, specialty and Hispanic  grocery stores under its United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos banners, and 7 convenience stores and 26 fuel centers under its United Express banner. United also operates two divisions, R.C. Taylor Distributing and Praters, and one wholly owned subsidiary, Llano Logistics, which operates the company’s two distribution centers in Lubbock and Roanoke, Texas.
