Private label suppliers are being tight-lipped about ConAgra Foods’ recent offer to buy private label maker Ralcorp Holdings Inc., signaling they may be surprised by the deal or fearful about what will come next in terms of industry consolidation and increased competition from a bigger ConAgra.
“I have mixed feelings being the small guy,” said one private label supplier. “Personally, I’m not sure that the deal will go through, but, from an executive standpoint, it does show they’re doing something.”
Omaha, Neb.-based ConAgra announced earlier today that it would bid $4.9 billion for the PL powerhouse in an attempt to increase its private label business.
Ralston Foods, the private label division of Ralcorp, is the nation’s largest supplier of private label cereal, producing both ready-to-eat and hot cereals.
