Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company is drawing consumer attention to its private label beer line with a limited edition holiday offering. Dubbed Seven Swines 'a Swigging Ale, the new brew features whimsical holiday-themed packaging and a bock-style flavor.

“We wanted to do something that would...showcase the fun personality of our brand and who we are,” says Christopher Ibsen, director of corporate affairs for the Charleston, S.C.-based company.

Crafted by Greenville, S.C.-based microbrewer Thomas Creek Brewery, the new offering features flavors derived from a blend of holiday spices and noble and American hops.

“We have a really fun brand, and being represented by Mr. Pig, we have a brand that makes people smile,” states Ibsen. “The overall success of Pig Swig has exceeded our projections.”

Seven Swines  is the third addition to the company's line of private label beers,Pig Swig, which launched in August. The other two varieties are Pig Tail Ale and Pigpen Pilsner, which sell year-round.

Success stories from its competitors and the company's enthusiasm for beer fueled its entry into the private label beer market. “We are pretty passionate about quality beer, and we've embraced the explosion of craft beer making that has taken place over the past couple of years,” says Ibsen.

Positive consumer reactions toward Pig Swig are pushing Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company to delve even further into the private label beer market with other standard and seasonal brews. The retailer plans to release more seasonal beers, including an Oktoberfest style lager and a summer ale, Ibsen says.

The 800 cases of Pig Swig are selling at each of the franchise's local stores for $8.99 per six pack.
