Kroger Co., Winn Dixie Stores, Publix and other National Beef Packaging Company customers all are participating in a recall of private label ground beef with a freeze-by date of Aug. 14, 2011. The meat is suspected to contain E.coli O157:H7, a harmful bacteria.

“It was imperative for us as soon as we became aware to become a part of that recall,” says Maria Brous, director of media and community relations at Publix. The company immediately pulled all of its private label ground beef products from its shelves after its supplier, National Beef Packaging released a statement noting that approximately 60,424 pounds of ground beef from its Dodge City, Kan., facility could be infected with the bacteria.

Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix recalled all of its private label ground beef, including prepared and ready-to-eat items like seasoned beef meatballs, blue cheese burgers and Montreal seasoned burgers. All the suspected products are marked with Est. 262.

Publix did not recall any beef from its Greenwise brand, which is provided by a different supplier.

The bacteria was found during a regular microbial test conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
