Walgreens, CVS and other drugstore chains are stepping up their PL game. Feeling the heat last year from mass merchandisers and other retailers offering inexpensive prescription drugs and similar front-end purchases, drug retailers are now retaliating by expanding their private label offerings beyond traditional drugstore products and ramping up their marketing efforts to help drive private label sales.
As a result, consumers who typically went to the grocery store once a week to stock up are instead stopping by drugstores for convenience shopping, analysts tell PLBuyer.
“For drugstores, if they could just get the price bugaboo out of the way and increase their selection, there’s no way that traditional food retailers are going to match them when it comes to convenience for fill-in or quick trips,” said Ben Ball, senior vice president of Dechert-Hampe, a Deerfield, Ill.-based consulting firm.
