News about Wegman's, Synergy Brands and Mother Parkers

Arriving now in all Wegmans Food Markets stores are the company’s first Wegmans store brand blood glucose monitoring systems – a basic tool in self-care for people with diabetes. Wegmans’ TRUEresult system and TRUE2go – small enough to fit a purse, pocket or gym bag - can help those with diabetes and pre-diabetes track blood glucose levels.
In announcing its preliminary third-quarter results, Synergy Brands says it is expanding Quality Food Brands (QFB) in Michigan by developing its proprietary brands along with store brands and private labels products, while downsizing its low-margin traditional grocery business in New York. QFB is expected to double its revenues in 2010 while the company's traditional grocery business is expected to be reduced by about 50 percent in 2010. The company added several major national customers for its QFB business in the third quarter along with additional complimentary lines within its brand offerings. QFB sells baking mixes, flour, pancake mixes, mashed potatoes, pasta salads and variety of skillets and packaged meals under the “Paula Dee,” Loretta,” “Gourmet Select,” and “Country Value” brands along with private label brands to major retailers in North America and several international markets.

Mother Parkers is converting its Brown Gold, Martinson and private label brands from metal coffee cans to Sonoco's paperboard composite containers. Switching to Sonoco's rigid paper container increases the overall recycled content of the package and reduces material weight by 27 percent, energy inputs by 34 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent. "Sonoco's rigid paperboard containers are less expensive to produce and ship than metal cans and they perform as well as metal canisters in abuse resistance and shelf life,” says Lib Trombetta, Mother Parkers' director of strategic global sourcing. Sonoco is a $3.6 billion global manufacturer of industrial and consumer products and provider of packaging services, with approximately 300 operations in 35 countries, serving customers in some 85 nations. Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee is a privately held producer of quality tea and coffee products in the North American market place.
