What's news in private label and retail

  • Toronto-based Shoppers Drug Mart recently introduced a line of health and beauty products under the Baléa brand. Designed to be "experienced" rather than merely "used," the upscale collection is expected to include more than 130 different items under seven different sub-brands by the end of the year, with hundreds more to follow in 2010, the company said.

  • ALDI Inc. announced new low prices on more than a dozen private label products, including Mama Cozzi's Pizza Kitchen pizza, Beaumont Classic Roast Coffee and Grandessa Signature Center Cut Bacon. The newly reduced items are featured on the Batavia, Ill.-based chain's Web site under the heading "Keep your cart filled with more of what you need."

  • Mauldin, S.C.-based BI-LO said it will reward Bonuscard holders who purchase 5 gallons of its Southern Home brand milk between Oct. 14 and Dec. 26 with a free gallon on their next visit. Promoted on the chain's Web site, the promotion ends Jan. 2.

  • To boost awareness of its own brand selections, El Segundo, Calif.-based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market said it will sample a different group of signature dishes during weekly in-store "Kitchen Table" events. Consumers who taste-test the items are invited to review them online; some comments will be featured on the chain's homepage.

  • Cincinnati-based Kroger recently introduced a line of more than 20 bagged salads and salad kits, including single-serve options. Offered under the Fresh Selections by Kroger label, the collection is part of the chain's Quality You Can Trace program, which gives consumers online access to harvest, packing and safety information, the company said.

  • The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), Montvale, N.J., unveiled a line of premium private label cheeses, including vintage-aged Gouda, cranberry chipotle cheddar and blue cheese with mild white goat's milk. Offered under the Hartford Reserve label, the collection includes many varieties made in Wisconsin by Master Cheese-Makers, as well as a selection of imported European cheeses, the company said.

  • Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears said it is reintroducing the Two Hearts Maternity by Destination Maternity collection at more than 500 stores nationwide this month. Also offered at approximately 100 Kmart locations, the line features dresses, swimwear, lingerie and sleepwear, with most items priced under $25. Last seen in June 2008, the revamped collection is available exclusively at Sears and Kmart.

  • Mississauga, Ontario-based Walmart Canada said it will host a Green Business Summit in Vancouver on Feb. 10, 2010. The event will allow business leaders, government officials, NGOs and environmentalists to share ideas and initiatives "good for the environment and good for the bottom line."
