What's news in private label and retail

  • Food Lion, Salibury, N.C., is promoting its private labels with an online sweepstakes and game. Scheduled to run through Aug. 6, the chain's Private Brand Stock Your Pantry sweepstakes will award six winners up to $200 in store brand products, while its Grilling Game allows players who collect enough "points" to download a dollar-off coupon for its Home 360 brand cups and plates.

  • Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spartan Stores recently launched a photo contest designed to showcase the many places consumers can enjoy Spartan brand products. According to the company, customers are asked to submit a photo of Spartan brand products "in action" along with a brief description. Twenty winners will share $2,600 in prize money, including a $1,000 grand prize. The contest closes Sept. 12.

  • In a sale scheduled to run through Aug. 7, Loblaw Cos. is promoting its entire line of President's Choice private label products. The Toronto-based company is using sales fliers to call out differences between the leading national brand in various categories and its President's Choice equivalent. Consumers who aren't satisfied with the store brand may return the product for a full refund, said the company.

  • Whole Foods, Austin, Texas, said it secured third-party organic certification for all 273 of its U.S. stores. CCOF, one of the oldest and largest USDA-accredited organic certifiers, carried out the audit, which was undertaken to comply with new federal regulations that require individual certification for every store, the company said.

  • Minneapolis-based Cub Foods recently became the second Supervalu-owned chain to introduce the nutrition iQ nutrition information program. Developed in collaboration with the Joslin Clinic, the program uses easy-to-see, color-coded shelf tags - hung just below the price tag -- to help consumers make better-informed food choices. According to the company, the program debuted in January at Albertson's stores and will be expanded to Supervalu's other banners later this year.

  • Dallas-based 7-Eleven celebrated its 82nd birthday on July 11 by giving away nearly 5 million free 7.11-ounce Slurpees at 6,000 stores in the United States and Canada. Every "Happy Birthday!" cup included a rewards code that allowed users to enter an instant-win game, the company reported. All players also received a code to buy reduced-price Live Nation concert tickets.

  • To celebrate the successful remodel of 51 of its North Florida and South Georgia stores, Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie debuted a new slogan: "Fresh Checked Every Day." Started more than two years ago, the remodels include expanded seafood and produce departments, custom sandwich shops and other upgrades, the company said.
