  • Touting the availability of "department-store quality gifts at affordable prices," Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS Pharmacy featured several of its own brand products, including Essence of Beauty pedicure kits and bathrobes, in a recent Mother's Day sales event.

  • Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, said it will add solar panels to more than 20 additional locations, putting it closer to its ultimate goal of solar installations in 70 stores. The chain also extended its commitment to offset 100 percent of its non-renewable electricity use through the purchase of wind energy credits.

  • Minneapolis-based Supervalu Inc. announced the appointment of industry veteran Craig Herkert as its new CEO. Current Supervalu CEO Jeff Noddle, who's held the position since 2001, will continue to serve as the company's executive chairman.

  • Jewel-Osco, Itasca, Ill., said it is cutting prices on "thousands of items that you shop for most." Offering savings of up to 20 percent every day, the "Big Relief Price Cut" includes hundreds of the chain's store brands.

  • The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), Montvale, N.J., said it would be sponsoring a special in-store savings event at all 144 of its Pathmark stores from May 1 to May 14. Offering "unprecedented deals," The Big Save includes family packs, yellow tag savings, deal zones, smart bucks and a full selection of value-priced store brands.

  • U.S. retailers Trader Joe’s, Monrovia, Calif.; Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif.; and Target, Minneapolis, were among the 99 companies named to Ethisphere's 2009 list of the “World's Most Ethical Companies.”

  • As part of its ongoing effort to reduce waste, Mississauga, Ontario-based Walmart Canada recently issued an open invitation to consumers to voice concerns about specific products with excessive or inappropriate packaging. Complaints will be registered by the company and then forwarded directly to product suppliers and manufacturers.

  • St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets Inc. said it recently was awarded the International Association for Food Protection's (IAFP) prestigious Black Pearl Award for corporate excellence in food safety and quality. Made up of more than 3,400 food safety officials, the IAFP gives its top honor to one food organization each year. Previous winners include Wegman's and HEB.

  • Dollar General, Goodlettsville, Tenn., included a selection of its DG and Clover Valley brands in a recent 10 for $10 promotion.

  • In a special promotion scheduled to run through May 21, Brampton, Ontario-based Loblaw's is offering customers who purchase selected President's Choice meat products "five times the PC points."

  • In an effort to boost consumer awareness of its "Guiding Stars" nutritional scoring program, Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion is offering visitors to its Web site the opportunity to "win" a free coupon by correctly guessing the number of stars awarded to various products. The Guiding Stars program is intended to help consumers quickly and easily identify more nutritious foods by assigning them one (good), two (better) or three (best) stars.
