  • In an effort to position its stores as a destination for fresh, quality meats, Minneapolis-based Supervalu Inc. is introducing a new brand of Angus beef. Backed by a marketing campaign called “Beef Spoken Here,” the Stockman & Dakota collection will include a wide variety of cuts grouped in-store by cooking method, the retailer said.

  • The Food Marketing Institute (FMI), Washington, D.C., said it named Ric Jurgens - chairman, president and CEO of West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee, Inc. - as its chairman.

  • Batavia, Ill.-based ALDI Inc. debuted its own line of cosmetics under the Lacura brand name. Developed by German skincare specialists, each item in the 25-SKU collection is priced between $1.99 and $3.99, the retailer said.

  • According to a report from Planet Retail, office equipment retailer Staples, Framingham, Mass., is teaming up with OXO Good Grips to create a line of more than 20 co-branded office supplies, including staplers, hole punchers, scissors and push-pin dispensers.

  • West Sacramento, Calif.-based Raley's is asking customers to "eat in for a chance to win." The chain's "Let's Stay in for Dinner" sweepstakes offers consumers who purchase Raley’s brand Black Angus Beef the chance to win a $2000 Ultimate Backyard Barbecue package.

  • Dig out your VIC cards! Now through June 2, Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter will pick up the tab for every 400th customer who uses the chain's loyalty card. The VIC Great Grocery Giveaway kicked off May 13, Harris Teeter said.

  • Unified Grocers, a Commerce, Calif.-based retailer-owned wholesale grocery co-op, said it will add 30 new items to its Natural Directions private label program. Among the natural, organic and earth-friendly products expected to debut within the next three to four months are salsa, crackers and canned seafood.

  • Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., touted a “Stock Up for Summer” event on its Web site. Held on May 16, the event allowed shoppers to sample a variety of the chain’s seasonal favorites, including new WPOP soft drink flavors and Wegman’s brand kettle chips.

  • Minneapolis-based Target Corp. will add mini grocery departments to 100 new and remodeled stores this year. According to a May 12 report in The Wall Street Journal, the move is expected to help the retailer better weather the economic downturn.
