  • New items and several tweaks to store ambiance is helping Tesco’s El Segundo, Calif.-based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market chain overcome a “somewhat rocky start earlier this year,” according to a November 3 article published in California’s North County Times. Tesco put a halt to new Fresh & Easy openings from April to July, the paper said, using the opportunity to “intensify its studies of American shopping habits.”
  • Safeway Inc., Pleasanton, Calif., said Health magazine named the company one of “America’s Healthiest Grocery Stores.” Safeway was ranked number two in the top 10 list of what the magazine called “standout supermarket chains” that are “leading the way to healthier food shopping.” Safeway said it received praise for its own O Organics and Eating Right brands, as well as its online FoodFlex program (which analyzes the nutrition content of a customer’s grocery basket at Safeway based on USDA guidelines and identifies heart-healthy alternatives as defined by the American Heart Association).
  • A Fred Meyer store in southeast Portland, Ore., is undergoing a renovation designed with LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) certification in mind. A November 5 article published in The Oregonian said the retailer, part of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., is aiming for silver certification and plans to wrap up renovation efforts next spring.
  • This year’s EMA Awards Gala, slated for November 13, will feature O Organics products from Safeway Inc. According to an O Organics spokesperson, some of Hollywood’s hottest chefs will use the O Organics products to crate savory dishes during the event. The EMA Awards Gala is an annual Hollywood event devoted to celebrating the entertainment industry’s environmental efforts.
  • The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc. (A&P), Montvale, N.J., said it unveiled its new price impact format at the Pathmark stores located in Boothwyn and Berwyn, Pa. The format is designed to make family shopping easier and more efficient.
