The 5 Razor

When it comes to Personal Care, once I find a product I like, I stick with it—for a long time. For as long as I can remember, I bought one kind of national brand razor and cartridges. But earlier this year, I noticed a CVS brand razor that had pretty much exactly the same features as my usual razor (due for replacement) at a SIGNIFICANT cost savings for the pricey cartridges. Lo and behold, I like it BETTER than the national brand. Nice grip and heft, clean and easy shave, cartridges perform well for a couple of weeks, bonus “Accublade” trimmer on the flip side for edging-down my oft-neglected Elvis-like sideburns?… Sold. Oh, and the Just the Basics shaving cream on the adjacent shelf says that it’s “for men,” so it goes into the basket, too. Another buck saved. DJP

Natural Body Wash

Natural. Yes, it can get a bad rap for those in the know (lack of strict federal oversight, etc.). Yes, it’s everywhere these days. And yes, it’s overused. But my household still puts a lot of weight on “natural” come checkout time (and we like to believe that we can tell the difference between truly “natural” products and those who are more “greenwashing” than “green”…). This is particularly true for Household Products and Personal Care, so when Walgreens launched its Ology brand, we began trialing the range with great success. This body wash—no artificial fragrances, phthalates, sulfates, parabens or silicones, bottle made from 100 percent post-consumer materials—is a natural fit for my whole household. DJP

OTC/Healthcare Aplenty

OK. I’m getting old. And by the looks of the OTC/Healthcare products I was able to pull out of the drawer in the kitchen, I need some serious help. My body is fully aware of this fact, but my brain still says, “Let’s go mountain biking with that guy you can never keep up with and who’s in far better shape than you even though he’s nearly a decade older than you… It’ll be great!” Then there’s the next day … barely able to move… Pond hockey with the kids in winter?... Misguided initiatives to start running again?… Sometimes it seems like I’m popping ibuprofen like Tic-Tacs… (My wife is the healthy/smart/yoga one who preventatively takes the vitamins, etc.) And why would I ever spend more for these drugs, vitamins and other pharma-goodies when they are EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE NATIONAL BRAND?... ’Nuff said.
