The 2014 Category Colonel Awards—New & Improved!

Those of us who make the retail world our home are more than familiar with the product tagline, “New & Improved!” The eye-catching phrase quickly grabs shopper attention as an indicator of change. But the degree of difference between old and new can land anywhere on the reformulation spectrum, from minor tweaks to a complete product overhaul.

In the case of our longstanding Category Colonel Awards, we went with the complete product overhaul.

While the Category Colonel Awards previously honored time-tested stalwarts of retail, the “new and improved” Category Colonels are all about new products (released within the past 18 months). The core thrust here is to highlight innovation, shining a spotlight on products pointing us toward the future of the private label industry.

As part of this overhaul, we’ve concentrated the number of categories for voting down to 25.

That succinctly covers all of the categories within past Category Colonel Awards—and every product category noted in this issue’s annually anticipated Product Guide featured on pages 13–44.

We’ve also built a high degree of verifiable, transparent logic into the Category Colonels nomination and voting process via our new partnership with BNP Media Market Research for the awards. This is their area of honed expertise.

A few weeks ago, you should have received an email linking to a form that allows you to nominate products for the 2014 Category Colonel Awards. If you didn’t receive this email, let me know ASAP, and I’ll get the link to the nomination ballot sent over to you right away. Get your suggestions in now, as the window for nominations will close at the end of the day on February 14.

After that point, BNP Media Market Research will develop and deploy the link to the voting ballot.

Voting will conclude at the end of April.
