The latest annual report from the National Association of Convenience Stores shows record sales again in 2012, driven by increases in fuel and in-store sales.

The NACS State of the Industry Report of 2012 Data shows that the industry recorded sales of $700.3 billion last year, with in-store sales rising 2.2 percent to a record $199.3 billion, and fuel sales up 2.9 percent to $501 billion.

Pretax profits reached a record $7.2 billion, but were basically flat as a percentage of sales from 2011.

The information is based on surveys from convenience stores, who receive a free copy of the 180-page report for their participation.

“We are extremely grateful to those who submitted data for this year’s survey,” said NACS Director of Research and Statistics Bob Swanson in a news release. “Not only does the NACS State of the Industry Report serve as the industry’s premier benchmarking tool, the data complied serves as an indefensible communications tool in quantifying our priority issues, both on Capitol Hill and with the national media.”

Alternative snacks showed the biggest growth gains for in-store sales, up 12.2 percent from a year ago, with liquor sales up 11.6 percent, cold dispensed beverages growing 11.3 percent, and sweet snacks up 10.3 percent.

In another section of the survey, foodservice sales led the in-store breakdown with 8.7 percent growth. That information is based on same-firm data from 2011 and 2012 submitted by 178 firms with 18,030 stores, and is different than the overall survey data.

In the same-firm data, gross profit in merchandise grew 2.8 percent from a year ago, while foodservice gross profit skied 13.2 percent from 2011. Overall store operating profit was reported to grow 9.5 percent in 2012.

The report is available for $749, or $249 for NACS members. It also is available as a PDF for $1,199, or $599 for NACS members. Orders can be placed online at by calling 800-966-6227.
