Two-thirds of retailers followed by Chicago-based market research firm Market Track increased private label promotions last week from a year earlier, according to an exclusive report for PLBuyer’s eReport.
Kroger was the leader, with 84.4 percent more promotions last week than a year ago. It was among the 10 retailers who increased promotions. Walmart pushed promotions up 82.1 percent, although on much smaller volume, while Albertsons (+66.7%), Giant-Landover (+52.6%) and Publix (+51.9%) also increased promotions more than 50 percent last week.
Drugstores Walgreens (-45.2%) and Rite-Aid (-40.4%) had the largest decreases from a year earlier among the five retailers who pulled back.
Market Track’s analysis reflects regional versioning and market specific differences in circulars. This is accomplished through an extensive collections process, including physically obtaining the ads from the various markets in which they are distributed. In instances where retailers send additional circulars to a limited number of markets, Market Track’s information reflects these nuances to give a view of what is happening nationally.
