Trader Joe's Shoppers Favor Private Label

In a new video on PLMALive! David Merrifield reports that Trader Joe's recently assembled a list of its most popular products and private label featured prominently on that list.

While most Trader Joe's products are private label products, it's their unique and unrivaled traits that show how far private brands have come.

For example, Speculoos Cookie Butter, a spread made of a Belgian cookie not yet well known here in the U.S. is an item that appeared as a favorite in the snack category.

The snack category was well represented on the list and included store brand flavored ginger snaps, pumpkin butter and peanut butter-filled pretzels, all of which are unique to Trader Joe's. The more basic, meal-oriented products like Mandarin orange chicken, tomato basal marinara and tomato & pepper soup are all Trader Joe's store brand items.

Merrefield concludes that these products with unusual flavorings are another indication that the old idea that store brands are imitations of national brands has passed and that many of the products listed do not have a comparable national brand.
