Tesco on Monday launched the first automatic price comparison coupon in the United Kingdom, one cover its branded and private label products.
The “Price Promise” compares the overall cost of a basket of groceries against the same or equivalent products from Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s, the company said in a news release.
If the basket would have been cheaper at one of the other sites, a coupon for the difference, up to 10 pounds, will be issued at checkout. Website customers receive their coupon by mail.
“We’re working hard to build a better Tesco for our customers in the UK and Price Promise is an important part of that,” Tesco UK Managing Director Chris Bush said in the release. “We know that most of our customers already save money by shopping at Tesco. On those few occasions where they could have got a better deal elsewhere, we’ll make sure we give them back the difference.”
Customers must buy at least 10 different items to qualify, with at least one of them comparable at the other grocers.
The promotion had gone through successful trials in Northern Ireland before rolling out Monday.
“Together with the Clubcard points our customers collect, Tesco offers exceptional value at a time when many families are watching the pennies,” Bush said.
