Supervalu announced this week that it will make executive changes leading up to the sale of five of its banners to Cerberus Capital Management, including a new leader of its private brand division.

Mark Van Buskirk, who spent 20 years with Kroger, has been named the executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Supervalu replacing Tim Lowe, and will be in charge of Supervalu’s private brand division and retail pharmacy team.

Vice President of Private Brands Sam Mayberry remains the head of the private brand team at the company, a spokesman said, and would report to Van Buskirk. Van Buskirk most recently was the vice president of meat and seafood merchandising and procurement at Kroger.

“We have much work to do, both today and after the transaction closes, but I am pleased with the new leadership team we are assembling and know together we will work tirelessly to improve our business and increase shareholder value,” incoming CEO Sam Duncan said in a news release announcing the appointments. “I am energized by what I have seen every day and believe this company will be successful going forward.”

In addition, Steve Fox was named senior vice president of food merchandising, and will report to Van Buskirk. Fox spent 41 years with Fred Meyer, including 10 years as vice president of produce merchandising and procurement and 11 years as VP of grocery merchandising and procurement. Rob Woseth was named executive vice president and chief strategy officer.

Duncan also tabbed Ritchie Casteel to take over the reins of Save-A-Lot as president and CEO, effective immediately. Casteel spent more than 30 years with Albertsons, moving up to vice president of operations for Albertsons’ Intermountain West Division. Casteel takes over for Santiago Roces, who the company said will remain over the next several weeks to assist in the transition.

Eric Hymas was named president of Shop ‘N Save, replacing Marlene Gebhard, who will stay with the company to assist the transition. Interim President Bill Parker will have the interim removed from his name atop the Farm Fresh banner, while Brian Audette will remain president of Cub Foods, Matt Leiseth will stay president at Hornbacher’s, and Bob Bly will continue as president of Shoppers.

Among the other executives who will leave are retail President Kevin Holt, Executive Vice President of Merchandising Tim Lower, and Chief Marketing Officer Michael Moore.
