Convenience store retailer 7-Eleven announced that it opened close to 5,000 stores worldwide in 2012, pushing the chain’s total to 49,500. It expects to open its 50,000thstore by the end of the first quarter.
“We expect accelerated growth in North America to continue, and we also see many more opportunities for international expansion,” 7-Eleven CEO Joe DePinto said in a news release.
The retailer added nearly 1,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada to push its North American total to more than 10,000 stores at the end of 2012. The company’s U.S. growth strategy is “to build market concentration in metropolitan areas in order to increase efficiencies and leverage the company’s scale and daily-delivery infrastructure,” it said in the release.
