NACDS CEO Says Industry At ‘Inflection Point’

February 4, 2013

National Association of Chain Drug Stores CEO Steven Anderson said Monday at the organization’s regional chain conference in Florida that the drugstore industry was entering a pivotal time as the NACDS marks its 80th anniversary.

“When the NACDS Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and staff worked together on the 2013 strategic plan, we agreed that our industry seems to stand at an inflection point – with many more inflection points on the horizon,” Anderson said. “Many of you tell me that decision makers seem to recognize pharmacy’s value as the face of neighborhood healthcare more than before. Many of you tell me that community pharmacy and the consumer goods side of the business have tremendous opportunities, but the trick will be capitalizing on them. I also hear about the challenges that could stifle not only innovation, but also the viability of some businesses.”

Walgreens CEO Greg Wasson, the chairman of the NACDS, said in a separate speech that community pharmacy needed to unite behind the organization, “and push like never before.”

“Consumer demand is pushing us to drive and accelerate the role community pharmacy plays in healthcare,” he said. “And our nation’s need for new, innovative solutions to help solve our healthcare crisis is what's pulling our industry to step up.”

Anderson said the theme of the 80th anniversary would be “Experience It!” and offered three pledges from NACDS: No other trade association would be more proactive for its membership in the implementation of healthcare reform, the organization would work to recognize pharmacies as healthcare providers in Medicare, and the Total Store Expo event in August would “live up to its billing as the best possible place for NACDS members to conduct business.”

Klingensmith’s Drug Stores President David Cippel, the chairman of the regional chain conference, took time to look ahead to the excitement he saw building for the Total Store Expo.

“I also want to recognize that NACDS has done a wonderful job in ensuring that we – the regional chains – have a home at the very exciting NACDS Total Store Expo. Six months out, about half of the chain companies at this meeting already are registered for the Total Store Expo and are helping to comprise an impressive collection of retail in the United States.”
