Walmart Pledges More U.S. Sourcing

Walmart U.S. President and CEO Bill Simon told the National Retail Federation’s BIG Show on Tuesday that the company and Sam’s Club would increase domestic sourcing by $50 billion over the next 10 years.

Simon said Walmart would grow U.S. manufacturing by increasing spending in categories where it already sources products domestically, such as sporting goods, apparel basics, storage products, games and paper products. It also will work to bring U.S. production back in categories such as textiles, furniture, and higher-end appliances.

“At the heart of our national political conversation today is one issue: Creating jobs to grow the economy,” Simon told the conference, according to a news release from Walmart. “We are meeting with our suppliers on domestic manufacturing and are making a strong commitment to move this forward.”

Walmart said that two-thirds of Walmart U.S.’s product spending goes to items made, sourced, or grown in the U.S. It said in the release that the company would create a senior team to lead the effort to increase domestic sourcing, and that it would sign longer-term purchase agreements with suppliers to provide more certainty.

In addition, this summer Walmart will convene a manufacturing summit “for stakeholders to work together and help accelerate these changes.”
