Retailers ended the year with an uptick in private label promotions, according to research done exclusively for PLBuyer’s eReport by market research firm MarketTrack.
Eight of the 15 retailers tracked by MarketTrack showed increases in private label promotions in the final week of 2012 from the year before. Publix had the largest increase, with 83.5 percent more promotions than a year earlier, while Safeway (+23.6%) and HEB (+17.3%) also showed significant increases.
Walmart led the decliners with 51.7 percent fewer private label promotions than a year ago. CVS (-46.3%) and Kroger (-44.2%) also registered fewer promotions.
Market Track’s analysis reflects regional versioning and market specific differences in circulars. This is accomplished through an extensive collections process, including physically obtaining the ads from the various markets in which they are distributed. In instances where retailers send additional circulars to a limited number of markets, Market Track’s information reflects these nuances to give a view of what is happening nationally.
