Whole Foods Market co-founder and CEO John Mackey will deliver the keynote address this month at the Private Label Manufacturers Association’s annual Private Label Trade Show in Chicago.

Mackey launched Whole Foods as a health food store in Austin, Texas, in 1978, and the company’s 365 private brand has proven “how creative and innovative store brands can be,” PLMA said in a news release announcing Mackey.

“It’s terrific to be able to present him,” PLMA President Brian Sharoff said. “John Mackey, I think he’s one of the guys that define the direction that store brands and retailers are going in the 21st Century. His message is based on quality and consistent responsiveness, and that’s essential to success in store brands.”

The keynote address will be given at PLMA’s Salute to Excellence Breakfast in the grand ballroom of the Hyatt Regency O’Hare at 8 a.m. Nov. 12.

In the news release, PLMA credited Mackey and Whole Foods for promoting natural and earth-friendly products, organic foods, and healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

In doing so, “Mackey and Whole Foods have also helped to drive important changes in the retail landscape,” the release stated.

Mackey’s speech is part of a series at the PLMA Trade Show, including a series of seminars Sunday afternoon, No. 11, on industry research, retail trends, and packaging technologies. There also will be a PLMA Live! Breakfast on Tuesday morning that will present special reports from PLMA correspondents on site.

There also will be a two-day education curriculum for retailers and suppliers Nov. 10-11 in Chicago, conducted in conjunction with The Center for Food Marketing at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

The show itself will feature the debut of PLMA’s Sky Hall, an expansion into the upper level of the hotel space that will put a showcase on major exhibitors, including Ralcorp, ConAgra, Clement Pappas, and Tetrapak.

The upper level will host about 70 exhibitors, and feature a redesigned entry to showcase the space itself from the ground floor. The hall will be open at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 12, a half-hour earlier than the other halls.

“There are three big things that make the show a little different, a little better,” Sharoff said. “Sky Hall, which opens up the space upstairs for us for the first time, accommodating these larger and larger companies like Ralcorp and Bay Valley Foods. Plus, it gives us access to another 500 units in the future (downstairs) so the show can grow. That’s a big, big, important strategy.

“The pet pavilion carries forward our category development, identifying categories that need to be promoted and spotlighted. We’ll also be promoting our new Ask PLMA website,”

It’s a show that has Sharoff excited to kick off.

“All of it plays back to the theme of the show, the amateur boxer, and the slogan that store brands takes on all comers,” he said. “That’s what the show is really about this year. All the success, all the growth, leads to the point where there’s really not a category, or type of product, or format where store brands have not shown they’re the equal or better of national brands.”
