Shoppers can save about 30 percent on their grocery bill by purchasing store brand products, according to new research from the New York-based Private Label Manufacturer’s Association (PLMA). The association’s research found that consumers saved an average of $46.39 when purchasing 43 different store brand food and non-food products on a typical supermarket trip.

The research said the price differential in soda, lotion, sinus spray and aspirin saved consumers even more - between 50 percent and 60 percent. Items such as ice cream and cereal, meanwhile, saved consumers more than 30 percent. Store brand frozen pizza and dog food saved consumers a bit less - 23 percent and 25 percent, respectively.

The research involved an eight-week price comparison in a “typical” suburban supermarket located in the Northeast, PLMA said.

“Prices may vary from market to market,” said Brian Sharoff, president of PLMA, “but the savings that consumers will achieve will follow the same pattern across the country.”
