Conference Coverage: Meijer Plans New Value PL Line, Expanded PL Efforts, Speaker Says

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer is planning a new private label line in what it terms the opening price point, or value, range, because “We want to make sure we don't drive our customers somewhere else for just a few products,” said Ralph Fischer, group vice president, foods merchandising, for Meijer, as he spoke Monday at the Private Brands Summit in Chicago.

Meijer also has a new product development team and a new sourcing team for what it calls its own brands, and has opened an innovation center to help it develop more unique private label offerings, Fischer said at the summit which is being put on by the Food Marketing Institute, a retailer trade group.

“When people buy from you, they want to know they're special” and offering them private label items they can't find elsewhere answers that desire, he told attendees at the summit's opening session.

Meijer's private label portfolio includes Meijer, Markets of Meijer, Meijer organics and Meijer Naturals.
Meijer is No. 17 on PLBuyer's exclusive list of North American private label retailers, as compiled by Retail Systems Research.
