Looking Back, Looking Ahead…Digitally…for You
By the time you read this, two momentous events will have taken place, one on the business side of my life, one on the personal side.

PLBuyer will have launched a new Web site, the PLBuyer Superstore, in May and by now you’re already using it; just prior to that launch, though, I will have attended my 40th high school reunion in New York.
The Web site is obviously the future for how private label retailers will link with suppliers. The reunion is obviously about my past; yet the two are linked in the journalistic life I have led.

I discovered my love of journalism working on my high school paper and have rarely thought of doing anything else with my professional life. What I loved about journalism from the first time I wrote for my high school paper was being able to tell people things they didn’t know, things that would help them live better lives, even then, even as a 14-year-old cadet PFC in a 1,000-student military school in the then sleepy, now trendy, Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.

So much has changed since I left high school to study journalism at Marquette University and then to get my journalism masters at Northwestern University. But much of that change has involved how we journalists give people information and also broaden the range of information we provide.

The Internet is changing the how and the what of our profession because now people can talk back to us and to each other and do so very dramatically. So, as business journalists today, we need to be much more aware not only of what you need to know that we can find out and tell you, but also what you want to know for day-to-day operations, like how to find a supplier and how to do so in a real-time, multimedia way, viewing everything from videos to online product descriptions and even listening to podcasts if  you prefer audio information streams.

Our new site is one more tool in our arsenal of weapons to help you do your jobs better. The insights we bring you regularly in print about where your business is headed and how you can stay at the forefront of it will be available on our new site as they are in our e-newsletter, on our home site,, on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

In short, we bring you more information - in more usable forums and delivery mediums - than anyone else. We are here for you, to help you be better at what you do. Our job is to supply you with business insights and business intelligence. That’s something that really hasn’t changed in the 40 years I’ve devoted to journalism. My typewriter may be history, but my commitment to delivering actionable, insightful content is still very much here.
