Portland, Ore.-based Coffee Bean International, a coffee roaster and wholesaler, said it received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification for its new 125,000-square-foot roasting facility, making the building the first LEED-certified coffee roasting facility in the Pacific Northwest and the second on the West Coast.

The company said its LEED Silver certification was based on a number of green design and construction features, including:

·          Energy-efficiency that is 20 percent more than what is required by code.

·          Motion-detection and automatic shutoff lighting.

·          Disconnected downspout (water goes to onsite filtration system of planters that clean the roof water).

·          Landscaping with native plants.

·          Low volatile-organic-compound (VOC) paints and carpets.

·          Recycled carpet backing tiles.

·          Dual-flush toilets.

“Coffee Bean International has always been keenly invested in being a leader in the industry, from our early adoption of sourcing organic beans to our work establishing the fair trade certification process,” said Patrick Criteser, president and CEO of Coffee Bean International. “The new green building solidifies our commitment to the environment.”
