What's news in private label and retail.

  • Walgreen Co., Deerfield, is preparing to enter the fresh food business with a line of freshly prepared salads, cut fruits, ready-to-bake pizzas and sandwiches, Business Week reported. The chain currently is in talks with manufacturers that are expected to create both private label and branded offerings.

  • Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion LLC said Food Lion and Bloom shoppers can earn up to $10 in free groceries during its Private Brand Super Sale. Scheduled to run through Feb. 2, the promotion offers Food Lion MVP and Bloom Breeze cardholders a $1 coupon for every Food Lion, Bloom or Home 360 brand product they purchase during the event, up to $10. During the first week of the promotion, which kicked off Jan. 6, customers earned more than $180,000 worth of free groceries, the company said.

  • St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot said it has launched a wellness program designed to highlight better-for-you private label and national brand products that carry the Smart Selections logo. Created in conjunction with ConAgra Foods, the program includes recipes, shopping lists, in-store signage and online videos featuring "Supermarket Guru" Phil Lempert.

  • CVS/pharmacy, Woonsocket, R.I., said it recently kicked off a new Double Bucks promotion that offers ExtraCare cardholders who purchase certain CVS brand products the opportunity to earn double rewards. Scheduled to run through March 15, the "I Heart My Double Bucks" program also applies to prescription drug purchases.

  • Mauldin, S.C.-based BI-LO said it recently wrapped up a 10 for $10 "Mix & Match" sale featuring more than 50 different items, including several of its Southern Home store brand products. Open to all BI-LO Bonuscard holders, the promotion allowed consumers to buy as many or as few sale items as they wished for the same low price.

  • Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine, said it added four new kids’ cereals to its private label lineup. Available in several different flavors, the four waffle-type cereals are included in the chain's Guiding Stars program, which awards one, two or three stars, depending on a product's nutritional value, so consumers can make better-informed choices.

  • Batavia, Ill.-based ALDI Inc. said it will celebrate the first anniversary of its Lacura collection by offering special prices on a variety of beauty and skincare products. According to the company's Web site, the award-winning Lacura line offers "feel-good beauty at prices you really won't believe."

  • Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans is using its Web site to promote the chain's club pack meats. In addition to "helpful hints" for using and storing several pounds of meat, the "Buy Big, Save Big" page offers recipes that allow consumers to get three meals out of a single club pack.

  • Four supermarkets made Fortune magazine's annual list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For." Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans ranked third; followed by Nugget Market, Woodland, Calif., at number five; Whole Foods, Austin, Texas, at 18; and Stew Leonard's, Norwalk, Conn., at 64.
