What's news in private label and retail.

  • Delhaize Group-owned Food Lion LLC, Salisbury, N.C., said it kicked off a new ad campaign last week that spotlights another round of price cuts on thousands of items customers buy most. The "Low Price Heritage" marketing campaign features Cathy Green, Food Lion’s president, discussing ways the chain can help customers save money on groceries. The ads will appear in print, on the radio, online and outdoors.

  • In recognition of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix said it will donate $1 to the Arbor Day Foundation for every reusable bag sold in its stores between April 22 and 25, up to $40,000. The chain also is offering a downloadable coupon good for $1 off the purchase of its Energy Smart CFL two-pack light bulbs - plus a free reusable Publix bag.

  • Minneapolis-based Target said it will give out 1.5 million reusable bags to customers who make a purchase during Earth Week, which began Sunday, April 18. Made from recycled plastic bottles, the bags feature both the Target bulls-eye and the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle logo.

  • Under the provisions of its new Sustainable Seafood Policy, Mississauga, Ontario-based Walmart Canada said it will sell only sustainably sourced frozen, wild and farmed fish in its stores by 2013.

  • The Kroger Co., Cincinnati, recently kicked off its annual online Design a Reusable Bag contest. Now through May 21, customers are invited to submit designs for a new generation of reusable Kroger grocery bags. Shopper cardholders who design a bag will receive an electronic coupon for a free reusable bag; would-be bag designers also may purchase a bag featuring their own design.

  • Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, El Segundo, Calif., said it is offering coupons for a free reusable bag on its Facebook fan page. Customers who spend $20 or more are eligible for the giveaway. The chain also said it reduced the amount of plastic in its own-brand half-liter water bottles by 50 percent. 

  • Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford Bros. said it is soliciting designs for reusable bags from kids in grades 1 through 8. The theme of this year's Reusable Bag Design contest is fruits and vegetables. The winning design will be featured on reusable bags sold at Hannaford Stores in 2011.
