  • 7-Eleven Inc., Dallas, announced the launch of a 32-item line of private label products under the brand 7-Select. The new items include cookies, candy, nuts, potato chips, beef jerky, trail mix, chocolate-covered pretzels, coffee espresso beans, raisins and peanuts. Suggested retail prices offer a significant savings over those of similar national brand items, the company said, ranging from 10 to 20 percent.
  • Bloom, Salisbury, N.C., is offering what it calls a “nifty little handheld bar-code zapper” that allows customers to scan items while shopping. The grocery chain said the scanner not only saves shoppers time, but also lets them keep a running total of their groceries so they stay on budget. Customers simply sign up to take advantage of the service.
  • On December 1, Ingles Markets Inc., Asheville, N.C., reported its 44th consecutive year of sales growth. The company said sales grew 13.6 percent to reach more than $3.2 billion for the fiscal year ended Sept. 27, 2008 (compared to fiscal 2007 sales).
  • Loblaw Companies Ltd., Brampton, Ontario, said all corporate and participating franchise stores no longer will provide complimentary plastic shopping bags at the checkout, effective Earth Day 2009 (April 22). Loblaw said it would continue to encourage customers to use alternatives to plastic bags, enhance its affordable reusable bag options and charge 5 cents per plastic shopping bag when customers request them. The move is part of an overall commitment to green initiatives.
  • Warrenville, Ill.-based ampm’s current “What’s the Deal?” promotion features a number of ampm private label products. Through December 3, customers can get an ampm BBQ-Rib Sandwich for $1.29, two 16-oz. cans of Unbound Energy Drink for $3.00, two bottles of Revive Vitamin Water for $2.22, and a free bag of Shadow Hills Snack Sticks when another is purchased.
  • Marsh Supermarkets Inc., Indianapolis, is promoting a home-prepared dinner for four for $9.09. The dinner features a boneless chuck roast and the grocer’s Food Club canned vegetables, Food Club boxed specialty potatoes and in-store bakery Chocolate Brownie Chocolate Chunk cookies.
  • Target Corp., Minneapolis, said it is partnering with designer Thakoon Panichgul to create the next limited-edition collection for GO International, “an innovative program designed to provide affordable fashion created by world-renowned designers.” Panichgul, known for his avant-garde updates to classic American sportswear, will launch an exclusive collection on and at most Target stores nationwide on Dec. 28, 2008, Target said.
